Transmute the
long half-life.

Transmutex Canada Limited develops accelerator-driven transmutation systems — reducing the burden of long-lived nuclear waste by converting it into elements that decay on human timescales, not geological ones.

Transmutation, as a discipline.

What we mean by the word
Sector Nuclear engineering Focus ADS · Transmutation Region Canada · EU Horizon 2026 – 2040

Most nuclear waste will outlive every institution that produced it. That is a design problem, not a law of physics.

Transmutation is the conversion of one nuclide into another through nuclear reaction. In the context of nuclear waste, it means converting long-lived minor actinides — plutonium, americium, curium, neptunium — into fission products whose radiotoxicity returns to the level of natural uranium ore within a few centuries rather than a few hundred thousand years.

Transmutex Canada Limited is the Canadian engineering entity of a broader program developing accelerator-driven systems for this purpose. We work alongside the Swiss engineering team on target design, subcritical core physics, and safety architecture, with a focus on materials qualification in Canadian regulatory and industrial contexts.

The program is long-horizon by nature. Transmutation is not a technology you deploy in a quarter or a year; it is a discipline that outlives the careers of the people who begin it. We are comfortable with that. The alternative — leaving the problem to the next twenty generations of custodians — is not one we accept.

Accelerator Systems

A high-power proton accelerator driving a spallation source. The accelerator must operate reliably at megawatt-class beam power, with fast beam-tripping and restart capability suitable for coupling to a subcritical core.

Target & Subcritical Core

A liquid-metal spallation target generates the neutron flux that drives a subcritical core. Because the core is subcritical (keff < 1), it cannot sustain a chain reaction without the external source — a defining safety property of ADS.

Materials & Fuels

Minor-actinide-bearing fuels, cladding, and structural materials qualified for the high-radiation, high-temperature, corrosion-prone environments characteristic of ADS cores. Qualification is the long pole of the program.

Control & Safety

Real-time neutronics, reactivity control, and safety-case architecture suitable for Canadian regulatory review. Beam-tripping as the primary shutdown mechanism; passive safety characteristics as the secondary layer.

Method

How we build.

Four operating principles
01

Physics first

No proposal leaves the program until the physics it depends on has been independently reviewed. Neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, and materials behavior are examined by people whose job is to find the failure — not to defend the design.

02

Safety as architecture

Subcriticality is not a feature added to the design — it is the design. Beam-tripping, subcritical margin, and passive heat removal are treated as architectural properties of the system, not operational procedures layered on top.

03

Long timelines, careful delivery

Transmutation systems are multi-decade infrastructure. We optimize for the engineer who will take over the program in year fifteen, not for the demo that wins year two. Documentation, review, and institutional continuity are first-class deliverables.

04

Open to scrutiny

Nuclear work earns trust by being legible. Within the bounds of commercial confidentiality, we publish, present, and open our physics and safety cases to external review. When we are wrong, we would rather hear it early.
